What is Sermorelin?
Sermorelin is a synthetic peptide identical to the active portion (amino acids 1–29) of human growth hormone-releasing hormone. By mimicking GHRH, it signals the pituitary gland to produce and release the body’s own growth hormone.
Historically it was used as a diagnostic tool to test pituitary GH function, and it’s now discussed in wellness and longevity contexts.1
Benefits & what it’s studied for
Stimulates natural, pulsatile GH release while preserving the body’s feedback regulation.
Sometimes discussed in the context of deep sleep, since the largest natural GH pulse occurs during sleep; direct evidence is modest.
Studied as part of GH-axis support for lean mass and recovery, often alongside a GH secretagogue.
“Anti-aging” is widely marketed here, but human outcome evidence is limited and long-term safety data is thin.
How does Sermorelin work?
Sermorelin binds GHRH receptors on the pituitary’s somatotroph cells, prompting GH release in the body’s natural pulse pattern. Because it works upstream — signaling the gland rather than replacing GH — the body’s own feedback brakes stay intact, a key contrast with synthetic HGH.2
Dosing & administration
Research and clinical use describe subcutaneous injection. Sermorelin is short-acting, which is why timing is often discussed.7
This is educational, not medical advice. We don’t publish dosing. Specific dosing should be determined by a licensed provider after evaluation.
Risks, side effects & safety
reported effects include injection-site reactions, flushing, dizziness, headache, and occasional mild fatigue. Long-term safety data in healthy adults is limited. Anyone with active cancer or certain endocrine conditions should not use GH-axis peptides without specialist guidance.8
Legality & status
Sermorelin occupies its own regulatory lane distinct from the 2023 Category-2 cohort and has generally remained prescribable and compoundable where those peptides were not. As always, off Category 2 ≠ 503A-compoundable ≠ FDA-approved are three separate things, and status can change — confirm current standing with a licensed provider.4 See how the rules fit together in our legality explainer.
Regulatory status as of June 2026 — reconfirm against the live FDA 503A list before go-live.

Frequently asked questions
What does sermorelin do?+
It signals the pituitary to release the body’s own growth hormone in a natural pulse pattern, rather than replacing GH directly.
How is sermorelin different from HGH?+
HGH replaces growth hormone directly; sermorelin stimulates your body to make its own, preserving natural feedback regulation.
Is sermorelin legal?+
It sits in a distinct regulatory lane and has generally remained prescribable/compoundable, unlike the 2023 Category-2 peptides — but status evolves; confirm with a provider.
Sermorelin vs ipamorelin — which is better?+
They work through different receptors (GHRH vs ghrelin) and aren’t really interchangeable. The right choice depends on goals and a clinician’s evaluation. See our full comparison.
Does sermorelin help with sleep?+
It’s sometimes discussed for sleep because GH peaks during deep sleep, but the direct evidence is modest. We grade the broader wellness claims as emerging.
